If you’re at all familiar with a certain awesome movie you know (or should know) who Seu Jorge is. He is a brazilian dude with a silky smooth voice and some nice guitar noodlin’ skillz. This song is somewhat slicker and more meticulously produced than the man’s usual output (hints of Mama’s Gun-period Erykah Badu?) but I’m not complaining. Something like this could get a lot of play in my headphones come summer.

Up next we have some slightly goofy-sounding disco from… I would guess the early eighties. Poppin’ bass, some nice synthwork, all that good good. And also some guy singing who probably doesn’t make his living as a singer, y’ know? And I’m saying that with nothing but kindness. Just pull out a Funkadelic LP and tell me that those guys could carry a tune.

dOP (check the spelling) have been around for a while now. I remember hearing a pretty good sounding Justin Timberlake edit (!) they did it years ago. They’ve become something of a staple now judging by the amount of hits I get by searching their rather original moniker on Juno. The Ame remix of “No More Daddy” is a mean sounding little song. The desperately whispered vocals are underlined by a persistent drone punctuated with a bass warble that sounds like a bulldog bark. There’s also a touch of post-wave disco in there and it’s all good but this song is just creepy.

Here’s how little I know about house; Mario Basanov rings a bell but I have no idea if he’s some old grandmaster or a relative newcomer. Anyway “We Are Child of Love” is somewhat sombre and dark, like the previous tune, but in an Ibiza way. This song sounds like something you put on at 2 in the morning when the peak has passed but when no one is going home yet. There’s a hopefulness at the core, or something.

Lee Fields is another one of those fifties/sixties soul revivalists. Don’t get it twisted though, this guy looks like someone who’s actually from that era instead of looking like someone who’s just listening to a lot of Motown on his parents hi-fi. And if Mark Ronson‘s ilk make some nods towards modern pop, Lee Fields keep it strictly raw and soulful, which may make it just slightly hard for the skinny jeans crowd to enjoy.

This Kindness track is all kinds of clever. See this guy names his song “House” and then he uses “house” pianos in this track. But guess what? This isn’t a house song! What a clever fellow this guy is. All snark aside, it’s a good song. It’s kinda impossible to pigeonhole, it has shades of folk, the spindly pop of The Whitest Boy Alive and the experimentalism of Fever Ray. Also the dude looks like Jonny Depp, which is neat.

Azure: Santiago Salazar – Smile Now, Cry Later

“Smile Now, Cry Later” sounds exactly like the kind of tune someone called Santiago Salazar would make. It’s light as a feather, covered from head to toe in percussion and sounds like it should be played in the background for a travel ad for some Latin American resort, Cancun or something. Not Cancun actually, something with more palm trees and less Tequila-fed tourists. It’s summer is what it is.

I trust everyone is already familiar with “Marka“? This tune can be an attempt to catch that same vibe, or it may not be. It is nowhere as dark and threatening, but it has a similar feeling of space and the same bag of minimalist tricks as that song has. Maybe “Oblique” is the chilled out yang to “Marka’s” anxiety-ridden ying. Maybe it’s just a pretty darn good d’n'b song.

Okay. So this VCMG is some side project by that guy who makes Depeche Modes songs, huh? OK then. With this tune you can hear it but it’s not obvious. “Single Blip” could have originated from the same sound banks that gave life to “Personal Jesus” and “No Good” or it could have come from just some guy with a penchant for dark techno sounds. Actually it really reminds me of Jimmy Edgar. This is the way it works, the apprentices slowly become the masters.

We’re almost at the end but we still have two tunes to get through. The first is a Jori Hulkkonen reinterpretation of a Renaissance Man song. This one definitely doesn’t reinvent the wheel. We have snapping 808′s, rising acid synth lines and some rather nice work with reverb FX. And like most techno (?) tunes it feels kinda uneasy and creeping and inhuman and mechanical and uncaring. We are ze robots indeed.

We end things with the pick of yours truly. This tune is the closest you can come to aural candy without actually inserting a jellybean into your ear canal. It’s the very definition of super sound, produced to the point that no further tricks cannot be applied. At the same time it’s all sound and fury, signifying nothing. I really hope that Rustie on speed isn’t the next evolutionary step for electronic music but right now I’m happy chomping down on mr. Tanks bon bon, as bad as it is for me. Uh, that didn’t come out right.
