“Going Back To My Roots” is one of the most versioned piece of epic disco ever made. It’s written and originally recorded in 1976 by Lamont Dozier from the infamous Holland-Dozier-Holland production trio. This team was responsible for numerous productions for Motown records for artists such as Martha & the Vandellas, The Supremes, The Four Tops, and The Isley Brothers.

The best known version is made by a commercial disco group Odyssey but to me the best version after the original is the one made by Richie Havens.

Including three versions here. The first is the original Dozier, second an unknown house remix of the Odyssey piece (please tell me if you know the remixer!) and the third is a great re-edit of the Richie Havens version.

From Wednesday 10th of March to Sunday 14th of March our home town is hosting the 40th annual Tampere Film Festival. The festival programme has always included a nice selection of music related stuff, both films and events, and this year is no exception. One of the movie highlights at least for me is a documentary feature titled They Call It Acid which is about the birth of rave culture and the mother of all electronic club music, acid house.

The screening is on Friday in Tullikamari, and on the Klubi side ravers can enjoy a slice of nostalgia at the Shake That Acid III -party where some of the legendary Finnish djs spin acid house classics. The Future Shorts lounge is hosted by us Plauge Boyz. I prepared a small minimixtape of my favourite acid house gems to get your cultural week started!

In other news, Plauge is also takin’ over the city of Kotka on Friday! Bujashaka Suomi Special -night is held in Ravintola Kairo and has a very interesting lineup. Our dj-rascals will fin(n)ish the night off, proper.

The ZE label was one of the most colourful and diverse underground labels in the late 70’s and the early 80’s. This New York based label released loads of great disco, post-punk and no wave tunes. Here’s a couple of them. Enjoy!

Happy Mondays represented the true Madchester vibe from the late 80’s to the early 90’s. This song is one of their mellow ones, a nice midtempo roller with a hypnotic groove and the trademark piano sound of that era.
Many of the band’s tracks were produced by the legendary couple Paul Oakenfold and Steve Osborne, who also did some huge reworks at the time for artists like Massive Attack, U2 and The Cure. This club mix of ‘Hallelujah’ was also credited to Andrew Weatherall, another electronic music legend from the UK.
Put on your white gloves, blow the whistle and rave this one out in the early morning when the sun is just about to rise!

We are going to start a new blog series named after our new club. Nikola Tesla and drS made a tech house mix. It’s an improvised live mix with no planning whatsoever. It gets really jazzy at one point for some reason. It was originally almost two hours but we cut it down to a lean hour. We’re pretty happy with it.
