Kashmere Stage Band was formed in Kashmere High School in Houston, Texas by music teacher Conrad ‘Prof’ Johnsson. Conrad had seen Otis Redding’s concert year before and thought that this would be something he wanted to convert into high school world. Something equivalent to the sound and appearance to that era professionals. The legend was born.

What I found interesting is that when mint funk big band full of teenagers finally gets to join to national high school band competition, thanks to Conrad he broke down the color barrier, they truly swept floor with all other bands. Remarkable! As you can hear on those tracks above how they got what it takes to be as good as professionals. Sorry wait, they are pro’s!
Now after thirty-some years later Mark Landsman have directed movie about them and its called Thunder Soul. Here’s bits of the trailer with interview from the director.
