Here are the top tracks the Plauge Boyz have been feelin’ lately.
Jukola: Hot Cold Sweat – Meet Me At The Go Go
YouTube
We kick things off with Hot Cold Sweat’s Meet Me At The Go Go. My initial impressions are of a block party in a bygone era, back when breakdancing was still an incredibly novel expression of youth. This track sounds like it could have easily been a backdrop for a Sugar Hill group like Funky Four + 1. DJ Kool Herc, drop that shit!
Here’s 501 with some dubstep for yawls. I’m tempted to use my favorite phrase “nothing fancy” once again. For a dubstep track this tune is positively reserved, leaving room for melody and little drum breakdowns and not just focusing on BEING FILTHY AS FUCK as the kids like to say. Do I hear bits of guitar in there, also? Nice.
drS: Processory – Nightfall (Aeroplane Remix)
YouTube / Spotify / BeatPort
“Indie dance” is a weird genre. I think not many artist would be willing to label themselves as “indie dance”, since it feels almost derogatory. At its worst it brings to mind an apathetic dance floor full of skinny-jeans wearing kids, dancing slightly ironically to a disco track compressed to shit. Despite this I would consider Processory’s Nightfall an indie disco track. And if those kids are getting down to stuff like this, I’ve got to rethink my reservations.
Nice name, Robag Wruhme. Guess you didn’t think it was bizarre enough so you decided to name a track you made “Thora Vukk”. Whatever, dude, go back to Iceland. Nah, I’m only kidding you. Your name may be weird but you make some pretty good deep house. Anyone who’s ever been to Berlin is probably reminded of that fine city when listening to “Thora Vukk”. I know I am.
milo: Siinai – Anthem 3
Spotify
Sorry, milo, but I still don’t have Spotify. I’m sure this track is ten kinds of awesome, though.
Nikola Tesla: Jahcoozi – Day In Day Out
YouTube
I decided to pick what I consider a perfect late summer/early autumn track. Summer may not be completely over, but it’s obvious that we’re reaching the last hurrah. To me, the dusty production and slightly frosty mellowness of Jahcoozi’s Day In Day Out are equal to waning daylight, yellow foliage and that bittersweet sense of melancholy that defines autumn.
Herman Prime: Lone – Moon Beam Harp
YouTube / JunoDownload
Time for some heavy house vibes from Lone. This sounds like some early-rave-in-a-warehouse-type of stuff, with Lone going way back in time with throbbing 808′s, dark atmospheric chords and dense compression. Yet despite all this this track definitely sounds “new”. I love it when that happens.
SBTRKT is awfully cool. Along with James Blake, Ramadanman, Jamie XX and a few others he’s proven that dubstep and the plethora of styles and genres that have grown out of it recently can go beyond foundation-shaking wobble bass, heavy metal brutality and post-apocalyptic stoner imagery. This track for instance is deep, complex and soulful, but still retaining some of those defining features that make dubstep/bass music interesting.
Åke Kanaria: Dimitri From Paris & DJ Rocca presents Erodiscotique – Downtown
YouTube
Dimitri has been at it for a long time and frankly I think we should all be bloody grateful. This track is Dimitri sticking to his disco-flavored guns, a tune full of popping bass, squelchy synths and even some nice flute action there. Lovely.
Seppo Hanuri: Ebony – The Man I Love
YouTube
If you’re feeling hungry, I’ve got a fat slab of funk for you. Start chomping down and prepare to get fat. This is something like Boney M, if Boney M didn’t, you know, suck.
Lars Palmas: Jamie XX – Far Nearer
YouTube / JunoDownload
Jamie XX is the hipsters choice at the moment when it comes to electronic music, and there’s no reason why he wouldn’t be. His production can be kinda anemic and emotionally distant but the dude also is a monster when it comes to sounds, especially those vocal chops and drums. Not one for the dance floor but a hypnotic headphone treat.
Dalion: Hudson Mohawke – Thank You
YouTube / JunoDownload
FFFUCK! Hudson Mohawke absolutely kills it on this new one! I’ve always dug his off-kilter production style, but I’ve never been what you’d call an actual fan. But sweet merciful crap this EP is fucking amazing! It’s all over the place, doesn’t give a fuck about genres or whatever you have to say about it, it’s funky and weird and I’m running out of words please help me. Also: THE CD COSTS LESS THAN 7 CLAMS AT JUNO! STOP READING THIS AND PLACE THAT ORDER!
