Plauge Top Choons July 2011

Here are the top tracks the Plauge Boyz have been feelin’ lately. Also, we’re a little late, but it’s summer so hang up your hang ups, maaan.

Jukola: Donald ByrdThe Emperor
YouTube

You can’t go wrong with Donald Byrd. I seriously can’t remember when I’ve heard a weak track from the man. And “The Emperor” is no exception. It’s a big slab of pumping funk with a nice serving of jazz sprinkled on top. Lovely.

Wispy: Brookes Brothers & Danny ByrdPaperchase
YouTube / BeatPort

Moving on to some d’n'b-buziness with a Danny Byrd and Brookes Brothers (who?) collabo. Is using a voicebox in a tune that kinda sounds like sped-up trance (a la Rusko) the latest thing in bass music? I’m getting a Todd Edwards-vibe from the way those vocals are chopped up as well. Also: damn this song is hectic.

drS: Nick WarrenBuenos Aires
YouTube / Spotify

Next up Buenos Aires by some guy called Nick Warren (sorry, but you can’t keep up with every single name out there). It’s a lovely piece of maybe tech house? Percussive, deep, very fitting for a summer day. I just realized that you could probably make an around the world mix featuring tracks named after cities of the world. I like that.

Azure: Owiny Sigoma BandWires (Theo Parrish Remix)
YouTube / HHV

Here’s a jittery and somewhat spastic Theo Parrish remix. It’s balanced very nicely somewhere between organic and electronic a la Joris Voorn or Henrik Schwarz. Apropos of almost nothing at all: this tune has been released on Gilles Petersons Brownswood Recordings and I just want to give a hot tip about Brownswood Electric vol.2 which, like it’s predecessor, is an extremely nice collection of the freshest new electronic music out there and you should get it.

milo: Noir & SivesgaardVitek (Rodriquez Junior remix)
YouTube / Spotify / Beatport

This Noir & Sivesgaard tune can’t really decide if it want’s to be all blunt, detached and cool in a goth kind of way, or E’d up and waving it’s hand in the air in a Ibiza kind of way. Well, no reason it can’t be both, I guess.

Nikola Tesla: Seany MacOne of Those Days (Organ Mix)
YouTube

I’ve been on a R’n'B kick of late and Seany Mac’s lovely bassline number “One of Those Days” fits right in with that stuff. It’s nothing fancy, just a nice uptempo number with some cheesy, slightly poppy vocals. I advise not to make up your mind about the track until the piano breakdown around the three minute mark. Also: who the hell is Seany Mac? I can’t even remember where I found this tune and none of the major MP3 outlets have anything by the dude. Don’t be shy, Sean (or possibly Mac), you got no reason!

Herman Prime: Jennifer LaraI’m In Love (Waxist edit)
SoundCloud

Calling this track an “edit” is pretty generous, since this is just a sped-up version of the original. But it doesn’t really matter when the end result is this good. Nothing fancy, just a summery little tune to keep the girls on the dance floor swinging them hips.

Esmuntutu: The ConnectsSummer in the City
YouTube / Facebook Download link

“Summer in the City” by the Connects is an LMFAO-style cold gettin’ dumb-anthem. Nothing more than that to say, really. Except that the video is very reminiscent of the works of Blink 182. I mean it really is.

Åke Kanaria: Raphael SaadiqMoving Down The Line
YouTube / iTunes

If you’re not familiar with Raphael Saadiq, he was an integral part of Tony Toni Toné! in the nineties and then in the excellent Lucy Pearl for a bit, before branching out on his own. He’s made several solo records (a lot of times playing all the instruments!) and lately he’s been getting into the 50′s/60′s vintage soul that Mayer Hawthorne, Mark Ronson and the like have been doing for a bit. The Stone Rollin’ LP’s been heaped with praise and I can’t disagree with any of it. Quality.

Seppo Hanuri: GanymedIt Takes Me Higher
YouTube

If you’ve never heard of Ganymed, that probably makes it like a few hundred thousand of us. Anyway, this is a cool cosmic disco/80′s synth groover. Oh… I’m also getting a hint of italo disco there, is that right? Yes, definitely italo disco, really bad English accents and all.

Lars Palmas: The RaptureHow Deep Is Your Love?
YouTube

Okay. The new The Rapture song. A bit of a disappointment? Was I expecting another Whoo! Alright-Yeah… Uh huh? Maybe. In any case this is more of a slow burner, kind of a live version of a house song. It definitely gets extra points for all that sax… maybe I’m coming around. Also: someone pointed out that the chorus sounds like Sisqo’s Thong Song and damnit, I can’t unhear it now. Let mee see that thoong…

Dalion: Art of TonesToo Much
YouTube

Speaking of house, here’s some house. This tune actually fits really nice after that Rapture one. It keeps that monotonous vibe going but is less melodramatic and, well, emo. And we’re right back on the track with some summer vibes with this tune. Nice. Have a good summer yawl!
