Dance Classics Blog: The Mizell Brothers
By jukola | Mar 12th 2010 | Dance Classics, Music
Since I’m crazy for jazzfunk stuff, I’ll continue on the story about great production teams that Herman Prime started on the earlier post. So, to the groove roots!
Brothers Larry and Alphonso have made their mark on music history. They together have produced classical b-boy break with Johnny Hammond “Gears”, Roller disco anthem “Boogie Oogie Oogie” by Taste of Honey and lots of other great jazzfunk bombs. Besides on the hit tunes, their records are full of Deep Cuts. In my opinion their records doesn’t have bad tunes or at least not the ‘fill up tunes’.
The Brothers productions are widely sampled and remixed. After getting familiar with the originals you may start spotting samples here and there. J-Dilla, 2pac, Madlib, Ludacris, Destiny Child, Tribe Called Quest, Dj Jazzy Jeff -- just to name few of the biggest artist you definitely know. If you have any interest on jazz or funk or both or origins of the grooves, Mizell Brothers productions are well worth of checking out. I’ll list just few of my own favorites.
Used by: Stetsasonic -- Talkin’ All That Jazz (dominoes edit)
Remix: Madlib -- Please Set Me at Ease
With same theme, Bobbi Humphrey -- Young Warrior / Bobbi Humphrey -- Young warrior (madlib remix)
Also check Mizell compilation from spotify: The Mizell Brothers: The Mizell Brothers At Blue Note Records (1973 -- 1977 And Beyond)
By the way, here’s a funny fact: Larry Mizell is behind the very first testing done on the liquid crystal displays. ( -- that’s the LCD screen you are most probably watching at the moment…)
